Congratulations to Dax Sterner for being selected as the 2014 Emerging Artist!
During July, seven emerging artists benefited from of a month of promotion as the gallery members encouraged visitors to vote for their favorite artist. During the closing reception, finalist Dax Sterner was chosen as the winning emerging artist. From August through October, Sterner will participate in a mentored membership at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery, 405 S. 11th Street.
Dax Sterner earned an associates degree from The Creative Center in graphic design and illustration in 2000. His pieces are hand-worked, reassembled, and painted with his “edge.” Sterner explains how his personality shows in his artistic style. “As a surly teenager, I immersed myself in hardcore punk music and the DIY style and ethic it championed. At present, I still take that ethic to heart, using scrap lumber and broken furniture to make unique picture frames and art pieces.” His compositions reflect his inspiration in architecture, science, and history.
The Emerging Artist Program supports promising artists through collective mentoring. Through the next three months, Dax will benefit from the advice of professional artists and teachers who are gallery members. During his stay, he will learn about art gallery business, attend general meetings, and shadow work shifts. This program prepares the artist for a chance to join the gallery and become a member.
Our Emerging Artist Program helps Omaha and Council Bluffs area artists show a body of work in a professional gallery setting. We connect gifted newcomers with experienced mentors who will help navigate the operational details of selling artwork in the market. In addition, because we are a cooperative gallery and a non-profit organization, you will learn all facets of gallery operation from planning, to publicizing, to hanging a show. This program offers a gateway to creative entrepreneurship.
Our jury will select finalists to show 3-5 pieces in the gallery for one month. In addition, a following 3-month mentorship will be awarded to the winning artist, which is decided through a combination of a public vote and panel of jurors. The winning artist will receive exhibit time at the gallery, mentoring by professional member-artists, and participate in group meetings.
Entry is open to artists who are at least 19 years old with no history of professional gallery consignment within a 75-mile radius of the local metro area. Eligible applicants must submit consistent works in any visual art medium. Please note: it is possible that an artist has shown work publicly; however, to be eligible, they have not had an established relationship with a professional gallery in the area. No students (artist must not be currently enrolled in a high school, trade or training school, or undergraduate program -- we are looking for your own style and vision, not instructor-driven pieces).
